Maharshi Karve’s Kuti... A Memory Preserving a Legacy
The institution known today as the "Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha (MKSSS)" was born out of Bharat Ratna Maharshi Karve’s deep sensitivity and commitment toward women’s education.
In 1896, in Pune, with the presence of 16 members at the residence of Rao Bahadur Bhide, the institution was initiated under the name “Anath Balikashramachi Mandali” (i.e. Home for Orphan Girls).
The need of a larger residential space could be realised during the plague outbreak in 1899. Understanding this, Rao Bahadur Gokhale generously donated his six acres of land in the village of Hingane, outside Pune for the Ashram. And, this was the first when a windowless mud Kuti was constructed in 1900. It is known as the first construction /building of Samstha. The Kuti went under renovation during 1944, when the stone structure was constructed. Anna breathed last in this very “KUTI”.
This structure is listed in Class I of the Pune Municipal Corporation’s heritage list.

The Need for Preservation and Restoration
Heritage buildings are silent witnesses to our glorious past. It is essential that this memorial site continues to exist in its original essence and that its legacy is further enriched.
It has now been 81 years since the last renovation, and the effects of time and wear are now clearly visible. As a result, this historic structure is in urgent need of renovation.
This renovation is not just about preserving the past—it is about keeping a beacon of inspiration alive for future generations.

Inclusion in “Pune Darshan” Heritage Tourism
The institution has submitted a proposal to the Pune Municipal Corporation to include the kuti in its “Pune Darshan” tourism program. This will significantly increase the number of tourists visiting the site, allowing the legacy to reach a broader audience.

The "Chintan Angan" (Contemplation Courtyard) Concept
Taking all these aspects into consideration, the Sanstha has launched the “Maharshi Karve Kuti Sanvardhan” (Preservation Project).
As part of this, a unique “Chintan Angan” (Contemplation Courtyard) is being developed in front of the kuti to inspire reflection among students, teachers, staff, and visiting tourists.

“This Chintan Aangan (Contemplation courtyard) is a monument which stands for the traditional and cultural roots of Women’s Education. Every thought Cultivated on this place is a testimony of Maharshi Karve and Baya Karve’s selfless and determined mission. They nurtured this with unceasing care and dedication. Many challenges and constrains surfaced throughout this journey. But Anna and Baya never allowed it to flatter their devotion towards their mission. The seed they cultivated, eventually grew into a gigantic tree and was nurtured by many other great personalities of the time. This Courtyard is a homage to their collective efforts. This Courtyard will be an attestation of the preservation and propagation of Women’s Education. It will empower the mission culturally and traditionally, not only in national interest but would benefit the entire world. The seed of these values, sown on 14th June 1896, has now grown into a great knowledge-tree. This tree has flourished many saplings under its affectionate shade. The contemplation and reflection that has taken place in this courtyard has broken all the barriers and reached far corners of the country and the world.”
